Pitru Paksha Shraddha 2026: Pitru paksha homage to ancestors through food and water offerings in the form of Pind Pradhan and tarpan. The duration of the Pitru paksha is 16 lunar days in the lunar month of Bhadrapada /Ashwin as per the Hindu calendar. People from the south and west of India follow this in the lunar month of Bhadrapada and people from the north follow this in the month of Ashwin. It begins with the full moon day or a day after the full moon day and ends on Mahalyaya Amavasya. Pitru paksha Shraddha has different names depending upon the region and language.

Importance of Pitru Paksha:
According to Hindu scriptures, there are three debts. They are Dev, Rishi, and Pitru debts. People offer food and water to fulfill their ancestors who are invited to the earth’s planet during Pitru paksha. As a tribute and tradition, people perform Pitru Karya in Pitru paksha and are followed by Devata Karyas after Pitru paksha. When we follow this order one will get good results from Devata pujas. Pitrus bestow Santana, Santrupti (happiness), and Sampath (wealth). So this afterlife ritual is very important.

29 September 2026 – Maha Bharani Shraddha, considered highly auspicious for offering ancestral rites irrespective of the death tithi.

4 October, 2026 – Matru Navami, dedicated especially to deceased mothers and married women
Ghata Chaturdashi Shraddha
9 October, 2026 – Ghata Chaturdashi, recommended for those who passed away due to accidents, suicide or other unnatural causes.
Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarva pitru Pind Pradhan 2026 Date:
10th October, 2026 which falls on Saturday is the Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarva Pitru Pind Pradhan day. The most important day to perform Shraddha when the exact death tithi is unknown or when devotees wish to offer prayers to all ancestors together
