When is Tripindi Shraddha (Pitru Dosha) Puja performed?

What is Tripindi Shraddha?

Tripindi Shraddha is a Vedic ancestral ritual performed for the peace and satisfaction of departed ancestors. It is especially recommended when regular Shraddha, Tarpana, or other ancestral rites have been missed, discontinued, or could not be performed properly for a long period.

The word “Tripindi” refers to the offering of three pindas during the ritual. These offerings are made with prayers and mantras for departed souls who may not have received the prescribed ancestral rites or whose spiritual peace is believed to remain incomplete.

Tripindi Shraddha may also be advised when a family experiences indications traditionally associated with Pitru Dosha, repeated obstacles, disturbances in family life, or when the details or death anniversary of certain ancestors are unknown.

Unlike the regular annual Shraddha performed on the ancestor’s specific Tithi, Tripindi Shraddha is a special remedial ancestral ceremony and can be performed on suitable auspicious days according to the guidance of a qualified Vedic priest and the tradition followed by the family.

Sacred places associated with Pitru Karya are traditionally preferred for such rituals. Gokarna is regarded as an important Kshetra for performing Pitru-related ceremonies, including Tripindi Shraddha, Tarpana, Narayana Bali, and other ancestral rites.

The exact procedure and the necessity of Tripindi Shraddha should be decided according to the family situation, the nature of previously performed rites, and proper Shastric guidance.
Especially in Gokarna, Karnataka, Tripindi can be performed any time during the year.

Who should perform Tripindi Shraddha (Pitru Dosha) Puja?

A couple of husband and wife are jointly entitled to do the Tripindi.
A widower is also entitled to do this.
An unmarried person can also do this formality.
A Hindu woman goes to different family after her marriage. Hence she is not entitled to do the Tripindi or Shraddha
for her parents; but she can do the Tripindi or Shraddha for those deacesed who were related to the family if her husband.
A brand new unwashed white dress should be worn at the time of performing this formality.

Shraddha rituals at Gokarna are considered very important during first year of the death.

Shraddha at Gokarna

Which literally means anything or any act that is performed with all sincerity and faith. In the Hindu religion, it is the ritual that one performs to pay homage to one’s ‘ancestors’especially to one’s dead parents. Conceptually, it is a way for people to express heartfelt gratitude and thanks towards their parents and ancestors, for having helped them to be what they are and praying for their peace. It also can be thought of as a “day of remembrance.” It is performed for both the father and mother separately, on the days they became deceased.
It is performed on the death anniversary or collectively during the Pitru Paksha or Shraaddha paksha (Fortnight of ancestors), right before Sharad Navaratri in autumn.
Many people visit Hindu pilgrimage sites to perform, Shraadha ceremonies, like Gokarna (Karnataka) Haridwar, Nashik and Gaya.

Four stages are involved in performing Shraddha at Gokarna.

1 Vishwadeva Sthapana
2 Pindadan
3 Tarpan
4 Feeding the Brahmin

Why Shraddha is done?

According to Garuda Purana, after thirteen days of the death soul starts its journey for Yamapuri and it takes seventeen days to reach there.

The soul travels through Yamapuri for another eleven months and only in twelfth month it reaches to the court of Yamaraj. During the period of eleven months it has no access to the food and the water. It is believed that Pindadan and Tarpan done by the son and family members satisfy the hunger and the thirst of the soul during its journey till it reaches the court of the Yamaraj.

Hence Shraddha rituals are considered very important during first year of the death.Gokarn Priest

 Pind Daan at Gokarna

It is believed that to bring salvation to departed souls, Pind-daan is a must to do. Pind Daan is followed by all Hindus or followers of Hindu religion. Further, it is also believed that no work can be successfully performed without blessings of ancestors and the doing of Pind Daan invokes blessings of the dead ancestors. This pind daan helps the soul of ancestor’s soul of the death to attain Moksha(Salvation).
